message — Global message

A global message is “the light feedback after an operation completes”: save succeeded, network error, copy succeeded. It slides in from the top of the screen, stays a few seconds, and disappears on its own without interrupting the user. What core/message manages is the bookkeeping of the message queue — deriving the duration from the semantic type, trimming when over the limit, generating records — plus the live region role.

  • Each framework implements LhMessage (service-style API: LhMessage.success('Saved')): operation feedback, lightweight error hints, loading-in-progress notices.
  • Short-text, instantaneous notifications that need no user action.
  • Do not use it for: confirmations requiring user action (use dialog / popconfirm); longer content or with a title (use notification); a fixed in-page notice bar (use alert).

resolveMessageDuration semantic durations: the loading type returns 0 (do not auto-close) by default — a loading message that disappears on its own is absurd; it must be explicitly closed by business code. But when a duration is explicitly passed, that value is respected — resolveMessageDuration(0, 'loading') returns 0 (explicit), resolveMessageDuration(undefined, 'loading') also returns 0 (semantic default); the two reach the same result by different paths, and resolveMessageDuration(5000, 'loading') returns 5000 (explicit override).

clampMessageQueue returns the removed records: it returns not only the kept ones but also removed — the caller is responsible for triggering their onClose. This design matters: when the queue is trimmed, messages are forcibly removed; if onClose is not triggered, business cleanup callbacks (like analytics or state resets) never run.

Live region role mapping (same paradigm as alert / notification): warning / danger / error → role="alert" (immediately interrupts announcement), the rest → role="status" (queued, gentle announcement). This distinction has practical meaning: errors usually need to be known by the user right away, while success messages can wait until the user’s current action reaches a stopping point.

getMessageIconName returns null for loading: the loading spinner is rendered by the LhSpinner component (it needs animation), not a static icon — the UI layer renders different components accordingly.

Function Signature Returns Purpose
getMessageRole (type: LhMessageType) => LhAlertRole ‘alert’ | ‘status’ live region role
getMessageIconName (type) => string | null icon name returns null for loading
getMessageClassNames (state: LhMessageState) => string[] class names type + closable
resolveMessageDuration (duration: number | undefined, type) => number milliseconds loading defaults to 0
clampMessageQueue (items, max) => { kept, removed } trim result keep the newest max items
createMessageRecord (partial, seq) => LhMessageRecord record fills in default duration and offset

Constants: LH_MESSAGE_DURATION_DEFAULT = 3000, LH_MESSAGE_MAX_DEFAULT = 5, LH_MESSAGE_OFFSET_DEFAULT = 20.

export type LhMessageType = 'info' | 'success' | 'warning' | 'danger' | 'error' | 'loading'
export interface LhMessageRecord {
id: number
type: LhMessageType
content: string
duration: number // 0 means do not auto-close
showClose: boolean
offset: number // offset from the top of the viewport, in px
sx?: LhSxProps
onClose?: () => void
}
export interface LhMessageState {
type: LhMessageType
showClose: boolean
}

LhMessageType adds loading on top of the generic semantic constants (LH_TYPES_CONST: info/success/warning/danger/error).

getMessageRole('danger') // 'alert'
getMessageRole('warning') // 'alert'
getMessageRole('info') // 'status'
getMessageRole('success') // 'status'
getMessageRole('loading') // 'status'
  • An element with role="alert" is announced the moment it appears in the DOM, fitting errors; role="status" is announced in a queue, fitting success/info.
  • The aria-live supplement: when rendering, the UI layer usually also pairs aria-live="polite" (status) or aria-live="assertive" (alert) — role already implies this, and the duplicate declaration is generally harmless, but some screen readers support role more reliably, so writing both is the safest.
  • Announcing repeated messages: three consecutive “Saved successfully” messages get announced three times, which is correct (each is a new event). If suppression is wanted, the business layer should dedupe.
  • The close button: aria-label="Close" (an icon button has no text).

Class name Semantics
.lh-message container (fixed, top-centered)
.lh-message__list queue (transition-group)
.lh-message__item a single message
.lh-message__item--{info|success|warning|danger|error|loading} semantic type (icon color + border/background)
.lh-message__item--closable closable (reserves room for the close button)
.lh-message__content text

Four semantic colors: --lh-info-color / --lh-success-color / --lh-warning-color / --lh-danger-color; background --lh-bg-color + light border + shadow.

  • A loading message must be closed manually: resolveMessageDuration(undefined, 'loading') returns 0 and it will not disappear on its own. Forgetting to close it leaves a permanent “Loading” message — this is the most common misuse.
  • The relationship between error and danger: both map to the alert role and the error icon — danger is the name from the generic semantic constants and error is its alias (to align with the common LhMessage.error() API). Either is fine for the business layer.
  • Queue cap LH_MESSAGE_MAX_DEFAULT = 5: high-frequency scenarios (like upload progress) easily exceed 5 items and get trimmed — the onClose of trimmed records is triggered by the caller, and business timers must be cleaned up in sync.
  • The meaning of offset: it is the initial offset from the top of the viewport; the stacking gap between multiple messages is accumulated by the UI layer based on heights (see notification’s computeStackOffsets).
  • Uniqueness of id: the service layer’s module-level auto-incrementing seq is enough; if multiple instances coexist (micro-frontends), an external id prefix is needed to avoid conflicts.
  • SSR safety: the message service depends on the DOM (teleport, setTimeout); under SSR it should skip auto-creation and only become available after client-side hydration.
  • The deadlock of duration: 0 with showClose: false: a message that neither auto-closes nor can be manually closed exists forever — unless the business layer keeps the id and calls close(id). Always leave the user at least one way to close it.
